Krill are tiny marine crustaceans that primarily eat microscopic photosynthetic organisms called phytoplankton. In turn, krill serve as food for many large marine animals, notably baleen whales. Although krill reside in oceans around the globe, Moss Nutrition KRILL OIL is sourced strictly from krill residing in the cold Southern Ocean near Antarctica.
Antarctic krill are a good source of polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) which, in krill, are found naturally bound to phospholipids. Due to being phospholipid-bound, the omega-3s in krill oil exhibit outstanding intestinal absorption and uptake into human body tissues when compared to ethyl ester or triglyceride-bound fish oils.
Among marine omega-3 oils, krill oil is unique because of its naturally-occuring astaxanthin content. Astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant with potential to cross the blood brain barrier, is the pink pigment naturally found in shrimp and krill. The astanxanthin found in krill oil helps to protect its omega fatty acids from oxidation and preserve product freshness. Moss Nutrition KRILL OIL is further protected with additional vitamin A, provided in the antioxidant natural beta carotene form.
